## What MindShift is

MindShift is an AI journal for Android with a Stoic path. Choose Stoicism and each day you get one question, built from what you wrote before. Your guide, the Owl, reads your answer and replies with the deeper truth, a Stoic mind shift about what is yours to control and what is not, and one small step for today. It is free to download on Google Play.

## Who it's for

People drawn to Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus who want to practise Stoicism, not only read quotes. It suits overthinkers and worriers who want a calm, honest way to sort their thoughts, and anyone who has bought a Stoic journal and stalled at the blank page.

## How it's different

A printed Stoic journal gives you a quote and a prompt, and the rest is up to you. MindShift reads what you write and answers it, so the practice comes back to your actual week: the conversation you are rehearsing, the decision you keep reopening. Every reply ends in one small action, and you can switch to Dharma, Sufism or Ikigai at any time.

## The Stoic journaling practice, in three questions

The Stoics wrote to themselves morning and night. Their practice fits into three questions.

1. **Morning: what might test me today?** Marcus Aurelius began his day by expecting difficult people and deciding how he would meet them (Meditations 2.1). Preparing in advance takes the surprise out of the hard moment.
2. **During the day: is this within my control?** Epictetus opens his Handbook with it: some things are up to us and some are not (Enchiridion 1). Put your effort into the first group and stop arguing with the second.
3. **Evening: how did I do, honestly?** Seneca describes reviewing his whole day each night, hiding nothing from himself and being gentle about what he finds (On Anger 3.36). What went well? Where did I fall short? What will I try tomorrow?

MindShift folds these into one daily question, chosen from what you wrote the day before. For 40 written prompts, see our guide to [Stoic journaling](/blog/stoic-journaling-prompts/).

## An example reflection

Question: What conversation have you rehearsed in your head more than you have had it?

Answer: Asking my manager for the move. I have rehearsed it ten times. Each time it goes worse in my head than it probably would in real life.

The deeper truth: Rehearsal is not preparation. Ten rehearsals in, the practice is no longer making you ready. It is keeping you from finding out. The version in your head is always the hardest one.

Today's mind shift: How your manager answers is not yours to control. Whether you ask is. Put your energy there, and let the answer be theirs.

Your next step: Send one line before 11 am asking for 15 minutes on Friday.

## Questions people ask

### What is the best Stoic journal app?

It depends on what you want from the practice. If you want to read and reflect on Stoic quotes, a quote-a-day app or a printed journal such as The Daily Stoic Journal works well. If you want the practice applied to your own life, MindShift asks one question a day and replies to what you write with a Stoic mind shift and one small step. It is free to download on Android.

### How do you journal like a Stoic?

Use three moves: prepare in the morning for what might test you, ask during the day whether something is within your control, and review the day at night, honestly and without beating yourself up. Seneca described doing this every evening.

### Is Stoic journaling good for overthinking?

It suits overthinking well, because its central question, what is in my control, cuts a loop in half. You stop arguing with the part you cannot change and put your energy into the part you can.

### Can I use MindShift if I am new to Stoicism?

Yes. Replies use plain language and bring in Marcus Aurelius, Seneca or Epictetus only when a line genuinely helps.

### Is MindShift on iPhone?

Not yet. MindShift is on Android now, in English, and free to download on Google Play.

### Is MindShift the same as MindShift CBT?

No. MindShift is not affiliated with MindShift CBT, a separate app by a different developer. This MindShift is the reflection journal from startmindshift.com, made in India by MindShift Labs.
