# The Avoider (The Quiet Strategist)

> You know exactly what matters. Starting is the hard part. You return to themes of delay, resistance to starting, and the short relief that postponing brings. It is not laziness. It is fear dressed up as “later”.

One of the four MindShift thinking patterns: the Overthinker, the Avoider, the Worrier and the Clarity Seeker. Updated 2026-10-27.

## What this pattern is

You see more than you act on. Not because you lack capability, but because starting something means it can fail, and failure feels final to you. You have built an elegant system of not-yet, and it has protected you. But it has also kept you still.

The loop: Intention → Preparation → More preparation → Delay. You get ready to get ready. The preparation feels like progress, but the starting line never moves.

## What triggers it

The moment a task becomes real and visible to others. As long as it stays in your head, it cannot fail.

## Signs

- **The perfect Monday:** You plan to start fresh next week, again.
- **The prep project:** Buying the course, the notebook, the app, and not opening any of them.
- **The relief of a cancel:** You feel lighter when plans fall through.
- **The last-minute sprint:** Your best work happens at 2 AM before a deadline, and you are tired of it.

## What's really going on

- **The inner critic:** says you are not ready, so polishing the plan in your head feels safer than starting.
- **What drains you:** putting off the start does not save energy; the guilt of waiting burns more of it.
- **What you fear:** being seen falling short, so as long as nothing starts, nobody can judge it.
- **The turn:** you wait for the perfect moment, but a messy start today is what actually frees you.

## Four things to try

- **The visible start:** Tell one person you are starting something today. Visibility creates accountability.
- **The 2-minute entry:** Do only the first two minutes of the task you are avoiding. Stop after two minutes if you want.
- **The done list:** Write down everything you completed today, however small.
- **The stakes question:** Ask: what is the actual worst case if this fails? It is almost always survivable.

## How the shift happens (Avoider → Doer)

1. **Awareness:** Map every task you are avoiding and why.
2. **Reframing:** Separate starting from succeeding. They are not the same thing.
3. **Action:** One visible start per day. Public commitment to tiny actions.
4. **Integration:** Starting becomes part of who you are. The delay reflex weakens.

## Which philosophy helps

- **Stoicism:** Stoicism reminds you that the fear lives in the future and the action only ever happens now. As Seneca put it, we suffer more in imagination than in reality.
- **Dharma:** Dharma asks you to act without clinging to the result. When the outcome stops being the point, starting stops feeling so heavy.
- **Sufism:** Sufism looks beneath the delay to what you’re protecting. When you feel safe with yourself, starting feels less like a risk.
- **Ikigai:** Ikigai makes starting small enough to do today. Tiny, daily, meaningful steps beat waiting for the perfect moment.
